Department of Economics

The department started in the year 1963 July 23rd   with the inception of the college. Dr.B.G Radhakrishnan and Sr. Esther Theresa led the department to success till their superannuation. Since economics is a subject of core significance, the department is trying its maximum to make the students aware of all national and international issues. Prof. Philomena Thomas joined the department in 1984 and completed her service of 32 years as a HOD of the department and retired on July 2014. Prof.Prabhakumari joined the department in 1986 and is continuing her service. Shruthi G, the Alumnae of the college joined the department in 2014.

Core Features

  1. Remedial coaching for Kannada medium, sports and even foreign students on Saturdays and enable them to pass with distinction.
  2. Slow learners admitted with very low marks leave the college with high first class and distinction.
  3. The department has taken initiative to help a visually challenged student (Pallavi. M, I BA ,HEP) to learn diagrammatic economics.

Indian Economy

  1. Understanding characteristics, features, structural changes in Indian Economy.
  2. Comprehension of the nature and impact of New Economic Reforms on the Indian Economy.
  3. Knowing the problems of unemployment, poverty, rising economic and social inequality and problem of regional imbalances in India.
  4. Evaluating changing role of agriculture, industrial and service sector and foreign sector in Indian Economy.
  5. Measuring the problems and prospects of cottage and small scale industries and industrial sicknesses.
  6. Measuring the growth, volume, composition and direction of India’s foreign trade and capital inflow since 1991.

Micro Economics

  1. Knowing the decision making of consumer and identifying the nature of revenue and cost or production.
  2. Comprehending the demand function and production function and realizing various production theories.
  3. Clarifying the meaning of marginal, average, total revenue and marginal average and total cost and its implication.
  4. Awareness of different market structures and understanding pricing in different markets, judging the factor pricing.

Macro Economics

  1. Identifying the basic concepts and theories of Macro Economics.
  2. Awareness about changing macro economics policies and theories and understanding various concepts such as: GDP, GNP,NNP, Personal Income, Disposable Income, Per Capita Income and National Income.
  3. Identifying the factors determining gross domestic product, employment, the general level of prices, and interest rates.
  4. Realizing the law of markets, consumption function and investment function.
  5. Judging the role of fiscal policy and monetary policy in a developing economy.
  6. Knowing features, phases and theories of trade cycles, evaluating types, merits and demerits of taxes.
  7. Comprehending the role of public finance in developing economy.

Mathematics and Statistics for Economics

  1. To understand Nature and Scope of Mathematical Economics - Importance and Limitations of Mathematics in Economic Theory.
  2. To apply the mathematical techniques in economics theory.
  3. To know about importance of statistical tools in economics theory.

Managerial Economics

  1.  To understand the Nature, Scope and Importance of the Study of Managerial Economics.
  2. To study about meaning, objective and determinants of Demand Forecasting Methods.
  3. To apply Linear Programming function in economic theories.
  4. To understand the meaning, objectives and methods of pricing policy.
  5. To know about profit management.

Economics of Development

  1.  Understanding the concepts and aspects of economic development.

Money, Banking and Public Finance

  1.  To understand the meaning and definitions, functions & role of Money in Modern Economic System.
  2. Knowing about types and functions of commercial banks and NBFIs.
  3. Clarifying the functions of central banks.
  4. To understand the concepts and public revenue, Public Expenditure and Public Debt.

International Economics

  1.  Elaborating the importance of the study of International Economics.
  2. Finding similarities and dissimilarities in inter-regional and international trade.
  3. Evaluating various types of exchange rates and its merits and demerits.
  4. Discussing the types and effects of tariffs and quotas.
  5. Judging the function, merits and demerits of Foreign CapitaLand International institutions (IMF, IBRD, WTO and SAARC).

At present, Indian economy is at a unique position in globally interconnected world. As our economy is evolving, new issues and problems are also emerging. For a vibrant and growing economy, it is essential to develop capabilities of students to solve these economic problems. It is the collective responsibility of the university, the college and the faculty members of the department to acquire and strengthen the decision-making capabilities of the students

The Department of Economics at Teresian College, affiliated to the University of Mysore has also taken up the challenge to prepare future leaders who can take up the challenges of not only the Indian Economy but also the world economy. During these three years of their graduation, students in Economics are exposed to the challenges faced in the national and international economic issues. They are able to acquire strong analytical skills – both Quantitative and Qualitative – which equip them to overcome the challenges and offer solutions in their respective area of operations.  They are learning the modern analytical tools to get insight to come up with solution to the society and the economy.

I am looking ahead for an exciting future for the students of Economics and the Department as a whole in India and the world.
