Department of History

The Department of History was established in the year 22/07/1963 as an optional subject for B.A Degree. Sr. Cabrini was the lecturer in History and also the principal from 1967-70. In the year 1966 Sr. Annette joined the department as a lecturer who became the principal of the college for a long period from 1977 to 1993. The other faculty members of the department were Ms. Janaki 1967-77, Ms. Margaret Jacob 1968-69, Mrs. Jennifer A Pariat 1977-78, Sr. Carona 1979, Ms Mangalakumari 1979-80, Ms. R. Prabhamani joined the department as a part time lecturer in 1979-80. In 1981 she worked as a full time lecturer and from 09/07/1982 onwards started working as a permanent faculty of the department.  Sr.Joyce joined the department of History as a lecturer from 1982 and served as the principal from 1997 to 2010. Sr. Ann Mary joined the department as a part time lecturer in 1992. She became the PU Principal from 2002-2008. From 2009 she joined the degree college and later 2009 to 2011 she did her Ph.D work. In 2011 she joined the department and in 2013 she was deployed to Maharani’s college, Mysore. Again she came back and joined the department as a full time lecturer. In the year 2015 Ms. Sonia M.V joined the department as a part time lecturer.

The department conducts various activities under ‘Heritage Club’ every year to bring out the hidden talents of the students.

Programme Outcome

Students will be able to acquire Knowledge of  Historical Events, Societies, Cultures, Economic Conditions and Geography of  different countries and of different periods.  Students will be able to acquire basic research skills like Data collection, Analysing and Writing. They develop ability to think critically and historically.

Apart from imparting syllabus based learning, the department also focuses on Architecture, Numismatics, Epigraphy, Edicts, Wars and Folklore. We also nurture our students to stand affirm with their intellect and develop curiosity for learning. We encourage active students’ participation in all the activities of the department and the college for a better tomorrow.

  • Sr. Ann Mary has been appointed as BOS member in Christianity by the University of Mysore, for the academic year 2019-2020.
  • Sr. Ann Mary has received ‘Indian Independence Award – 2019’ for Best Researcher in Social Science on 18/08/2019.
  • Dr. Sr. Ann Mary was the Organising Secretary  of  Two - day National, Multi - Disciplinary Conference held on 23rd & 24th January, 2020.
